Tune in this week to Backstage Country to hear from one of the hardest-working, fun-loving duos in country music. Elaina Smith’s co-hosts are none other than LOCASH! Chris Lucas and Preston Brust have been serving hits like “I Love This Life” and their latest song, “Hometown Home” — tunes that make you want to roll down the windows and turn the volume up.
LOCASH’s Hits
“Hometown Home”
Elaina asked the pair about their latest single, “Hometown Home,” and how different it feels watching it climb the charts since it’s their first single from their own label. Chris and Preston joked that since they are their own label, they just call each other and yell at one another. Preston said that it’s on them if everything fails or succeeds. Fortunately, as Chris points out, everything is working out, and they could not have done it without their team.
The duo shared that they wrote “Hometown Home” during the pandemic over Zoom. Chris admitted they were a bit hesitant about it since there are already a lot of hometown songs. But they went ahead with it because they believe it’s “a good ‘rooty’ song.” Preston added, “And also, I think there’s a feel in America right now, just everyone wants to feel like home again, and get back to where we’re from a little bit. So, I think we fell right into a perfect moment with this song.”
“I Love This Life”
LOCASH released their song “I Love This Life” in 2015, and Elaina pointed out how the song is already a decade old. But Preston said that since they keep singing the song at the end of their show because the crowd is waiting for it, the hit “still feels fresh” and “it still feels new.”
Chris added, “It’s one of those songs that makes people smile and you can’t get enough of singing it. When you’re out there and you see people from the stage, and I crack up because you see people screaming, like spit coming out their mouth They’re just singing as loud as they can.”
Preston also shared an anecdote about when Aaron Benward of Blue Country attended one of their shows in Las Vegas when the song first came out. He said, “We sang ‘I Love This Life’ and the crowd sang it back. After the show, Aaron comes to me and he says, ‘Dude, everybody had their eyes closed. Everybody had their hands up, they were feeling it. I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s what’s happening with this song.’ And he said, ‘It’s almost like a country music praise and worship song. People are loving, appreciating their life.’”
Preston continued, “I was like, ‘Whoa, this is big.’ It went on to be the number 28 song of the decade in country music. So, I don’t think he was far off with that.”
